چکیده

This study examines the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Canterbury (1973–1989) in relation to climate. Three mixture models (Finite Mixture, Zero-in)ated Poisson and Hurdle) are used as novel methods which are able to highlight di8erential e8ects of climatic covariates between months of SIDS and no SIDS. These methods accommodate the extra zeros, heterogeneity and autocorrelation found in the SIDS series. Mixture models are comprehensive methods applicable to many discrete chronological series including the Canterbury SIDS data. This analysis leads to a better understanding of the association between climate and SIDS deaths. Results show a deviance-temperature (a measure of extreme change from the fortnightly average) is signi:cantly associated with SIDS risk (p¡ 0:005). Months where there is a high deviance-temperature are associated with increased risk of SIDS, compared to months where the temperature has remained reasonably constant. This :nding is consistent with the theory that hyperthermia, or overheating of infants leads to increased SIDS risk. In months where at least one SIDS death occurs, increased humidity leads to increased risk of SIDS (p¡ 0:001). c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Hurdle, Inflated Poisson and Inflated Negative Binomial Regression Models ‎ for Analysis of Count Data with Extra Zeros

In this paper‎, ‎we ‎propose ‎Hurdle regression models for analysing count responses with extra zeros‎. A method of estimating maximum likelihood is used to estimate model parameters. The application of the proposed model is presented in insurance dataset‎. In this example‎, there are many numbers of claims equal to zero is considered that clarify the application of the model with a zero-inflat...

Zero inflated Poisson and negative binomial regression models: application in education

Background: The number of failed courses and semesters in students are indicatorsof their performance. These amounts have zero inflated (ZI) distributions. Using ZI Poisson and negative binomial distributions we can model these count data to find the associated factors and estimate the parameters. This study aims at to investigate the important factors related to the educational performance of ...

A finite mixture of bivariate Poisson regression models with an application to insurance ratemaking

Bivariate Poisson regression models for ratemaking in car insurance has been previously used. They included zero-inflated models to account for the excess of zeros and the overdispersion in the data set. These models are now revisited in order to consider alternatives. A 2-finite mixture of bivariate Poisson regression models is used to demonstrate that the overdispersion in the data requires m...

Application of hurdle model with random effects for evaluating the balance improvement in stroke patients

Background: Stroke is a prevalent cause of disability in adults. The fall is the most common balance and motor impairments, which affects the quality of life in stroke patients. This study aims to employ random effects hurdle model for evaluating the balance improvement in stroke patients under the occupational therapy. Methods: In this longitudinal study with repeated measurement during on...

Assessment of length of stay in a general surgical unit using a zero-inflated generalized Poisson regression

Background: The effective use of limited health care resources is of prime importance. Assessing the length of stay (LOS) is especially important in organizing hospital services and health system. This study was conducted to identify predictors of LOS among patients who were admitted to a general surgical unit.    Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the sample included all patien...
